An exploration of Ford Moss with the possibility of a post-walk coffee and cake at either Ford or Etal.

A Site of Special Scientific Interest, the reserve features interesting flora and fauna, wild ponies, butterflies, gorse and the historical remains of an abandoned mining community. The main entrance is off a minor road off the B6353, 2km east of Ford Village, with limited parking on the grass verge. The road is signposted to Ford Moss, which is 1km south. At NT962375 a 5-bar gate gives access into the reserve.

Given that parking is limited the better option is to meet at East Ord for car shares. The entrance location is as follows:

WARNING:

The area is pockmarked with abandoned coal mine shafts. If you see some rotten fencing around something, keep away, it’s a shaft. No dogs are allowed.
After rain, it can be boggy in places, so appropriate footwear is a must.
